Along with Kerala and Tamil Nadu, Karnataka is one of India's traditional coffee growing areas. The history of coffee in the country dates back several hundred years. The first plantation was established in the 16th century and one legend is associated with it: Baba Budan – an Indian saint – during his pilgrimage to Mecca, decided to smuggle coffee from Yemen to his country. He hid seven beans in his beard, and on his return, planted them on the hillside of Chandragiri. Not surprisingly, the seven symbolic beans acclimatised perfectly to picturesque India and gave rise to one of the best coffees in the world. The quality, flavour and texture of the beans are influenced by the favourable climate of India's Karnataka region – there is a monsoon season for half the year, characterised by abundant rainfall, warm, humid winds coming from the Arabian Sea and high, tropical temperatures.
